5 EVENTS POPPING UP ON THE COAST THIS WEEKEND
By Brooke Darling - 20 January 2017

There’s so much action happening on the Coast this weekend, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
No plans? That’s about to change with this wee round up of things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend.

THE SOCIAL MARKETS | SATURDAY, JANUARY 21 The Social Markets, Gold Coast’s newest permanent (bi-monthly) night market, is back for another Saturday night filled with family-friendly good times. Between 4pm and 9pm you can partake in free barefoot bowls, scour the crafty market stalls, and feed your face with street food vendors and trucks. The team want you to know this Saturday is gonna be a little bit spesh, with Triple J Unearthed artist and local lad Dan Irwin picking up his guitar as well as Jacksons James Smith adding to the merry making. So grab a mojito and a deck chair from the back bar as the sun sets, and cross your fingers for a clear night!

Where: Mermaid Beach Bowls Club, 2408-2430 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach

Gold Coast Bulletin: BOUTIQUE MARKETS BOOMING ON THE GOLD COAST

A TRIP to the market used to mean a bucket of hot chips and a laser pointer, but with boutique offerings booming on the Gold Coast you’re more likely to return with a loaf of locally baked artisan sour dough and an outfit from an emerging designer.

The Isle of Capri Markets will launch tomorrow with 80 stallholders registering in just nine days after the event got the go ahead from Gold Coast City Council.

NightQuarter at Helensvale boasts 120 sites and has a waiting list of 300 stallholders such has been the popularity since the launch three weeks ago.

Mummy Tree Markets are back again tomorrow for one of their six annual events at Sanctuary Cove, and both Miami Marketta and Vintage Eat Boutique at Currumbin continue to go from strength to strength.

“We can thank the hipster movement — they love shopping and eating with us,” said Kat Creasey of Vintage Eat Boutique. “I think people were really bored by the imported goods markets and mass-produced stuff you can get anywhere. “My background is in events and marketing so I’m all about getting our name out there. “Our Facebook has gone viral — we’ve already got nearly 2000 RSVPs online for the December 19 market which is huge for us.”

Sam Lardner, of Isle of Capri Markets, said she targeted a demographic wanting Coast-made and designed fashion, food, homewares and produce. Our strict guidelines ensure that when you come to Isle of Capri Markets, you are buying local — we only present stalls that are from South East Queensland and Northern NSW,” she said. “You can purchase wild caught barramundi, fresh prawns and oysters, straight from the farm organic produce, on-trend plants, do all your Christmas shopping. “We are helping The Wiener Haus launch their new soda range and we also have Mon Dog’s new canine fashion range starting up.”

Mummy Tree’s Cinde (Cinde correct) Rosser is a comparative veteran of the boutique market with her event running for the past five years. Saturday’s 70 available stalls have sold out with parents trawling their Facebook page for the past few months anticipating the event. “A lot of them (stall holders) are mums and they’re totally on trend with what they’re offering,” Ms Rosser said. “This is no nana stalls market. It’s very hip and trendy and while there are markets for that kind of thing, that isn’t our market.”

12 FUN THINGS TO DO ON THE GOLD COAST THIS OCTOBER

By Brooke Darling - 5 October 2016

Is it seriously October already? WTAF. May as well just put a line through this month too, right? WRONG. There’s way too much goodness happening to write this month off.
From craft beer festivals, to outdoor cinemas, new night market offerings, and an after-dark yoga silent disco, there’s a whole lotta things to do on the Gold Coast this October.

Celebrating the Gold Coast’s blossoming craft beer scene, Free the Hops is nine days dedicated to all things boutique beer. If you missed the action of opening weekend, there’s still a bevvie of events to sink your beer-swilling boots into. From beer-pairing degustations, to tap takeovers, beer trivia nights, multi-venue brewery tours, backyard barbies with pigs on a spit, plus local brews galore. Check out the full wrap up of events here.

BEN & JERRY’S OPENAIR CINEMA | OCTOBER, THURSDAY 6 TO NOVEMBER, SUNDAY 6
The wait is over, folks! Ben & Jerry are blowing up their screen as we speak in preparation for a month of flicks and ice cream scoops under the stars. Surrounded by Norfolk pines and the sandy shores of Broadbeach, you’ll want to act fast to nab yourself a bean bag at what’s shaping up to be one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast in October. Top picks we’re loving on the calendar include War Dogs, The Secret Life of Pets, and Bridget Jones’ Baby, plus classics like Saturday Night Fever and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

BURLEIGH BREWING NEW BEER LAUNCH | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7Happening in conjunction with Free the Hops, we thought this one was deserving of an extra shout out. Sure, they’ve always got a rotating roster of experimental drops at the brewery, but it’s not every day this 10-year-old powerhouse bottles one up and distributes it to the masses. Kicking off from 3pm, celebrate Fri-YAY and the release of Burleigh Brewing’s newest addition, Twisted Palm (AKA Burleigh in a bottle) with a social arvo at the taphouse. There’ll be live music, food trucks, and high fives all ‘round.

FLOW AFTER DARK SILENT YOGA | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11
Calling all yogis! If you love to mix up your practice—say with some moody disco lights and smooth live DJ beats—you’ll want to nab tickets to Gold Coast’s first Flow After Dark Silent Yoga event, at Southport Sharks. With your own private party in your earphones (supplied, duh!), Kate Kendall and the team from Flow Athletic will guide you through a blissfully intense 90-minute Vinyasa yoga session. Tickets are $55 and on sale here.

GLITTER FESTIVAL | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6 TO SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9The glitter strip’s very own fest to celebrate and embrace our queer community will be getting sparkly all weekend. Glitter Festival’s 2016 schedule is all about freedom of expression and inclusiveness; basically the roster of dance, comedy, music, cabaret, theatre, film, and visual arts is too packed to list here, so jump onto the website and choose your poison.

CELEBRATE GOLD COAST | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9
We heart the Gold Coast any day of the week, but this is one special community shindig to show our sunny surf city how much we really care. Chevron Island’s Thomas Drive will be shutdown to host a street party celebrating the impending arrival of summer. Come for the pop-up market stalls, suitcase rummage sales, craft workshops, eats from existing local restaurants and visiting food trucks, two music stages, and festivities. Us? We’ll be timing our visit for the Beautiful Girls, scheduled to hit the main stage at 2pm.

THE 4217 MARKETS | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15
We hear it was a sweet line up of local creatives, food purveyors, workshops, and activities at The 4217’s inaugural monthly markets. Now all they need is you! Returning in October will be over 25 pop-up stalls joining permanent faves such as Paradox Coffee Roasters, Salt Meats Cheese, and CHA Tea.

THE SOCIAL MARKETS AT MERMAID BEACH BOWLS CLUB | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15
Did someone say NEW night markets? Hola! It’ll be barefoot bowls on steroids, when this social Aussie sporting pastime is joined by a gaggle of pop-up market vendors. Expected at this inaugural bi-monthly The Social Markets are art, design, fashion, and homewares stalls, plus a food truck alley, local craft beers, local musos, and DJs. Hosted by the same team behind the well-established Isle of Capri markets—could this be one of the coolest new things to do on the Gold Coast in October?

BUSKERS BY THE CREEK | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15 AND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16
With SWELL over for another year, we know you’re looking for any old excuse to drag the fam bam back down to magical Currumbin. Well folks, this is a damn fine reason—the return of Buskers by the Creek. Smattered along the Currumbin estuary foreshore adjacent to Duringan Street, this family-friendly event has a whopping 280+ artists and performers lined up for the weekend-long fest. Think: a swag of live bands and solo musos, circus acts, contortionists, comedians, dance troupes, and aerial BMX tricksters, plus market stalls and food trucks with ample street eats to munch down on. Those good vibes come for free.

WOMEN ON WATER WITH SURFING QUEENSLAND | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15 AND MONDAY, OCTOBER 24
Have you promised yourself that THIS summer you’ll finally learn to SUP, or perhaps you’re itching to work that awkward wobble out of your paddle skills? On their tireless mission to get people active on the water, the generous folk over at Surfing Queensland will be hosting a series of Women on Water stand-up paddle boarding sessions. Taking place on beautiful Tallebudgera Creek and free to participate (that’s equipment, instruction, and rad chick company for nada), be quick to secure your spot on October 15 or 24 (or November 5 and 19 the month following).

CASTROL GOLD COAST 600 | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 TO SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23
If you’ve not cruised through Main Beach and Surfers recently, you will have missed watching the race track being erected in preparation for the turbo-charged Gold Coast 600! Been before and already know what it’s all about? Well, perhaps this year you might be tempted to mosh to impressive muso headliners including The Rubens, Birds of Toyko, Peking Duck, and The Living End. Then, while you’re at it, hit up Club600, an 18+ day club with some hot minx female DJs set to steal the show from the noisy V8 supercars. Two-day trackside and party passes start at $115 per person.

MARRY ME AT MARKETTA | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23
‘Tis the season for wedding bells, so if it’s your turn to walk down the aisle next, you’d best be marking this date in your diary. For Marry Me At Marketta, Miami Marketta will be transformed into a whimsical ceremony and reception venue at the hands of a swag of stylish local suppliers. Admire their handiwork then discuss face-to-face how they can each assist to bring your wedding ideas to life. Book your ticket (just $12) to coincide with one of four bridal fashion parade sittings. Wedding catering suppliers and food trucks will also be on hand to sample their wares, and the bar will be open to help you in coaxing along your hubby-to-be.

QT HOTEL GOLD COAST:
MARKETS ON THE GOLD COAST

By Rory Switzer.

All things have a way of coming back around. You can find examples wherever you look. This is most noticeably seen in the fashion and music industry (Kanye West, although a buffoon, encompasses both of these examples). Do you know where else this back-to-the-future phenomenon has reared its ever-cycling head? SHOPPING.

Before the days of malls, mall cops, four story escalators, five acre parking lots and disgruntled Santas, along with grocery store chains, pesticides, never-ending isles and far too many pasta sauce flavour choices, were local markets.

This was a cherished forum where townsfolk would get together regularly to trade, buy and sell goods that they built/designed/grew with their own two hands and/or feet and a heartbeat. Although the non-trading attendees, aka consumers of these gatherings may have not been beneficiaries of cost savings via mass distribution chains, or had the same variety of goods to purchase as we see in today’s shopping centres and grocers, you know what they did have? A sense of community.

Studies upon studies have examined the endless benefits that local markets bring to all players of the game. Perhaps this is why there has been an influx of markets popping up all across the Gold Coast over the past few years such as: Surfers Paradise Beachfront markets, Carrara Markets, The Village Markets, Nerang Markets, Miami Marketta, Burleigh Farmers Market and Ferry Road Markets, just to name a few!

The newest kid on the local markets block is Isle of Capri Markets. These postmodernists are bringing lifestyle, produce, home and fashion into one outdoor melting pot. Every second and fourth Saturday of the month you’ll find local vendors offering up a wide variety of locally grown foods, woven garments, handmade jewellery and anything else these creative locals have been working on. The Isle of Capri Markets has plenty of parking, is a 10-15 minute walk from Surfers Paradise (depending on whether you have or haven’t already indulged in some locally made churros…mmmm) and you can even bring your four-legged friend along. Just don’t bring Kanye West please.
